Vertical Design & Review

Roundabout vertical design and construction details are integral parts of roundabout design. Operational design elements impact the effectiveness and safety of the roundabout. MTJ reviews vertical design, curb types, construction details, and material choices to maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of the roundabout as a traffic control device. We offer:

  1. Review of existing and proposed topography, approach roadway profiles, and anticipated grading impacts and site constraints concerning minimum and maximum longitudinal grades.

  2. Review of intersection sight distance, stopping sight distance, and k-values relative to the proposed profiles.

  3. Confirming preliminary drainage flow paths and superelevation transitions are located to fit the existing topography and site constraints and conform to best practices for roundabout safety.

  4. Review of the crown location, grade breaks, cross-slope transitions, and profiles for each entry and curb return.

  5. Review existing drainage patterns, outfall locations, and anticipated cross slopes to confirm low points, high points, and vertical clearances are accounted for in the vertical geometry and storm sewer system design.
