Our Team
MTJ’s dedicated engineers are at the heart of our mission, applying innovative traffic planning and operational analysis to create safe, efficient, and multimodal transportation systems. Guided by our shared values, we design solutions that move people of all ages and abilities easily and reliably through roundabouts.
Mark T. Johnson, P.E.
Founder and CEO
As an early adopter of roundabout applications and design, Mark Johnson, PE, has helped shape the evolution and acceptance of roundabouts in North America. His journey began 30 years ago when roundabouts were still a rarity in traffic and roadway engineering. Through expertise, advocacy, and innovation, he has contributed significantly to the paradigm shift in traffic design that has made roundabouts a widely accepted solution for safer, more efficient transportation networks.
A Career Built on Innovation & Expertise
Mark’s early career as a transportation development review engineer for the City of Loveland, CO (1994-1998) and later as a traffic engineer and planner for a small Fort Collins-based consultancy (1998-2001) gave him first-hand insight into the challenges of finding multi-modal solutions with traditional traffic planning and signalization.
Recognizing the potential of roundabouts to improve safety, efficiency, and multimodal integration, he pursued extensive training and mentorship first with Lief Ourston followed by UK roundabout expert Barry Crown—who later remarked:
“Mark’s understanding of the relationships between traffic planning, multi-modal objectives, roadway, and roundabout design is a rare combination of skills that truly sets him apart. His ability to envision the big picture utilizing roundabouts’ unique attributes before delving into the details is invaluable.”
Shaping Policy & Best Practices in Roundabout Design
Mark’s tenure at the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (2001-2005) was pivotal in launching the state’s first roundabout program, where he served as a statewide resource for public outreach, feasibility, analysis, and design. His efforts helped establish best practices that continue to influence modern roundabout implementation.

Craig Donze
Vertical Design Review, CAD
Craig provides vertical design, civil design, and reviews. Craig has 25 years of design and construction project management experience, specializing in the geometric design of urban roadways. Over the past 20 years, Craig and MTJ have worked on over 60 roundabout projects.
Craig’s expertise allows the MTJ team to provide vertical design services. Craig’s experience offers senior-level vertical design recommendations in a review or direct design mode capacity. This is delivered in Civil 3-D and/or red-line comments for incorporation by the prime firm or agency design team. This has proven to create savings in project schedules, design fees, and construction costs.
Justin Packard
Sr. Graphic Designer/Visualization
Justin has 20 years of experience creating a wide range of technical graphics work, specializing in illustration and conceptualization, and develops 3D visualization, modeling, fly-through videos, and planning materials to provide visual consensus among members of the design/approval teams. Justin’s work and skills illustrate:
Accurate representations of proposed improvements
2-D exhibits/planning materials for review and consensus-building
Safety performance check documentation
