Greensward Rd. & US 62 (Johnstown Rd.)

New Albany, OH

  • BACKGROUND

MTJ was retained to provide a peer review for this rural, transitional speed roundabout application located on US Hwy. 62.

This peer review followed MTJ’s 3-Step Review/Design Optimization Process, which includes:

    Traffic Planning and Operational Analysis

    Alternative Concept Development

    Preliminary Design

  • SUMMARY

In Step 1, MTJ conducted a traffic planning level review of the system of intersections along Johnstown Road (US 62). Of particular concern was the effect a roundabout may have on ingress and egress of the two intersections located north and south of the proposed roundabout at Greensward and US 62.

In Step 2, MTJ developed a “right-sized” roundabout that accounts for design vehicles and avoids unnecessary realignments that do not add safety or operational value.

Step 3 resulted in a context-appropriate design that minimized adverse impacts (ROW, environmental) and maximized community benefits while adhering to all roadway and roundabout-specific safety design principles.

Highlights

  • Improved speed control

  • Compact roundabout design

  • Large freight/truck accommodation

  • MTJ redesign reduced ROW impacts

  • Improved driver expectancy
