MTJ Roundabout Engineering provided analysis and design services for the first multi-lane roundabout in central Alberta, in the City of Red Deer. The proposed high-volume, multi-lane design was designed to provide safe and efficient vehicular operations, accommodate large trucks, and provide safety for non-motorized users. Pedestrian safety was a major consideration with three high schools planned nearby.
Key to the roundabout design, to maximize safety, was the development of horizontal geometrics that allow for future capacity expansion for the three traffic horizons with minimal future construction efforts. In addition, the design simultaneously provides acceptable Level of Service for each traffic planning horizon. The design also includes accommodations for large truck/freight movements.
