66th and Portland Avenue
Richfield, MN
All roundabout designs require special considerations for local conditions and this project, located in suburban Minneapolis, was no exception. Key to the design were considerations given to heavy flows approaching from the North leg during morning and evening rush hours as well as local business considerations including a municipal swimming pool and sports complex. This intersection was also built to accomodate heavy city bus traffic as well as bus stops on each leg slightly up stream from entry points.
After the implementation of this roundabout, MTJ was asked to review the design due to an unusual amount of crashes in the intersection. We quickly recognized several discrepancies between the initial signing and marking design and the implementation seen on the site. MTJ consulted with the city and recommended changes be made to better guide drivers and pedestrians through the intersection. These changes were implemented in August of 2011 and have been reported as having an extremely positive effect on operations. The video on this page shows peak flows (4:30 - 5:30pm) after these signing and marking changes were made.
